Germany explores EU-backed subsidy scheme for hydrogen power plants

Germany’s Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) says it has made progress in talks with the European Commission on plans to establish a subsidy framework for hydrogen power plants.

The government wants to tender for 8.8GW of new plants operated with hydrogen from the get-go, with another tender for up to 15GW of gas-fired plants to be transitioned to hydrogen by 2035.

Although the talks with the European Commission are yet to amount to any planned measures under state aid law, the BMWK says it will publish the hydrogen measures of the power plant strategy at the end of the German Parliament’s summer break for public consultation.
